This site was created in May of 2016 when the La Cañada Unified School District (LCUSD) School Board, located in La Cañada-Flintridge California, decided to adopt a new Common Core aligned mathematics textbook called Everyday Mathematics in its three elementary schools. Parents strongly opposed the adoption of Everyday Mathematics (EM), concerned that the constructivist curriculum was a poor fit for the district’s ~4,000 students.
This site was initially created to coordinate parent opposition to EM, document the irregularities in the process by which it was selected, and chronicle how it fared in use in the district once it was formally adopted in 2016. Following that failed attempt to stop adoption of EM, La Cañada Math Parents (LCMP) mobilized its members to better provide parent input during the adoption of the middle school mathematics textbook that occurred the following school year (i.e. 2016-17), and to address other concerns related to mathematics instruction in the district at all levels K–12.
Since that time, LCMP has worked on a number of math-instruction related policies and issues within LCUSD to better assist parents in obtaining the quality mathematics education they seek, and finally in 2024-26 helped the district to finally get rid of EM and replace it with Math In Focus, the Singapore Math curriculum in use in grades 6-8 that parents preferred during the initial 2016 K-5 adoption.
Thank you for this enlightening website. Other than San Marino using the program, I don’t see any reason that La Canada should even consider this program, let alone adopt it. I have contacted a San Marino parent who has stated that all three of her boys were terrible at math and performed poorly on the standardized testing.
